The Value of (good) Music

I don’t think it’s a coincidence whatsoever that over half of all Americans are unhappy and that the majority of music (Top 40 radio) is what it is. It’s an experienced-based value system. The sooner we alter our value system, the sooner we improve the quality of our lives overall.

Dis-Illusions II

Here’s a music excerpt I’m currently working on, taken from a dance piece entitled Dis-Illusions II, choreographed by Donna Sternberg and performed by her company. I’m honored to be working with her and her amazing dancers once again, this time in a new and unique space, the new LALA (LA Live Arts) space.

Clippers

Not the most amazing team in terms of performance. But….

…at least the Clippers don’t get “bored” anytime during the regular season. Who likes watching a team that yawns through any of their games? Why on earth would you do that??

We’re taught at a very young age the adage: “it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” Funny how what we’re taught as children (and continually reminded of all throughout our lives) is completely tossed aside by most adults.

It seems trivial on the surface. Yeah, so we as adults really do care about winning and it’s the ends that justify the means. Is that so wrong? Hmm, I guess not. Except for a minor detail which eludes most miserable, depressed individuals and is embraced by a rare few, truly happy ones: it’s about the moment. It’s about now. It’s about being absolutely present in the task at hand and enjoying every minute of it. You just can’t always do that if your single-minded purpose is focused on the end. This is because there is no end. The end is just an illusion.

Part of this post is to address why I’m a Clipper fan, since it seems to boggle many so-called “sports fans” as to why anyone would like to watch a losing team. I like to watch them because they’re fun to watch, simply put. I like watching underdog teams. I like watching inexperienced players in a game dominated by stifling dinosaurs – growing, changing, developing. I could care less who wins a championship title. I could care less that they “suck” and don’t make it to the playoffs. In the end, it’s a game, a form of entertainment. And I find the struggle – the fight – most entertaining. To watch people do anything – whether it be sports, music, theater – with anything less than 100% is a bore to me. Interestingly, I am more entertained by the fans of these teams, actually, who ironically seem disproportionately more passionate about their team than the actual team has for the game they’re playing.

The most important part of this post is to remind us all that life is, in fact, all about how you play the game. The longer we obsess over trophies and the end results, the longer we’ll stay trapped in despair.
